Stone, and where it goes

Our Outlooks & Goals
We set out to emulate nature — stone work that looks and feels like it belongs in the landscape, rather than fighting it.
Every stone is hand-picked by J L "Buddy" Lewis at quarries across the United States. He grew up in the Appalachians collecting stone, followed that into geology, and has an engineering background behind it. He has been in the stone business since the 1980s, and he still oversees every delivery from start to finish. Stone can be delivered upon request.
Rock Garden supplies landscaping and hardscape businesses and contractors, and homeowners building a place of their own. When time permits, Rock Garden can be commissioned to design a garden or a stone feature, at additional cost.
Six areas, one yard. Every material we carry is chosen for one of these — aquascape and swim pool stone, hardscape and accent stone, and the same stone whether you are ordering a truckload for a job or one boulder for a bed.
01Ledge stone for the falls and the stream walls, cobble for the pond bottom and the planted edge. Chosen for how it stacks, how it sheds water, and how it ages once it is wet.
02Stone for natural swimming pools and water features — stone edging around the water, rockwork at the banks and plantings that soften the join. We supply the stone that goes into and around the water.
03Thin ledge stone for dry-stacked walls, flagstone for patios and walks, blocky rock for retaining and grade. What a hardscape is built out of is what it is ten years from now.
04Boulders for a focal point or a natural seat, crushed granite for paths and bed cover, mixed stone for dry creeks and drainage swales. Small materials, large effect.
05Landscapers, hardscape crews, pond and water-feature installers. Volume stone ordered the way you work, with one supplier who can cover the ledge, the flag and the gravel for the same job instead of three.
06A boulder for the corner of a bed, gravel for a path, stone for a pond you are putting in yourself. You do not need to know the names of the materials — bring a photo or a rough idea and we will work it out together.
Not sure which one you need? Describe the project and we will point at the stone — a photo of the site helps more than a description.
Each area in detail→You can commission Rock Garden to design a garden, a stone feature or a landscape. The goal is to emulate nature — stone set the way it sits in the ground on its own, so the work looks found rather than installed.
Landscape design is available when time permits, at additional cost. No packages, no schedule to promise — just ask when you call and we will tell you honestly whether it fits your project.

For homeownersJ L "Buddy" Lewis grew up in the Appalachians with a lifelong passion for collecting stone, and it followed him into the field of geology. He has an engineering background too, and he has been in the stone business since the 1980s — starting after his graduation. He hand-picks the stone at quarries across the United States himself, and oversees every delivery from start to finish.
Rock Garden sells that stone for aquascapes, natural swim pools, hardscapes and landscape accents, to landscapers, hardscape crews and homeowners alike. He would rather talk a project through than hand over a load of the wrong material.
The goal is to emulate nature.

These are the stones Rock Garden supplies, and what each one is used for. Color and size vary from piece to piece and load to load — that is what real stone does.

Hand cut Italian stone, cut by hand rather than sawn, so the faces and edges keep a worked, slightly irregular character. Used for walls, caps, steps, patios and accents.
Hardscape
Irregular flat slabs, laid as walkways, patios and stepping paths through a lawn. The natural face is what you see; the flat is what makes it walkable.
Hardscape
Rough, blocky fieldstone and hewn blocks, for walls, steps, columns and stack work. Solid, square-ish stone that builds up in courses.
Hardscape
Sawn and rough sandstone blocks in tan, pink and buff, for walls, caps, steps and border edging. Soft enough to shape on site, so it trims and fits where it lands.
Hardscape
Ledge stone and blocky rock for dry-stacked retaining walls, garden walls and stone steps, with the flag saved for the treads and caps. It stacks without mortar and reads as a natural outcrop.
Hardscape
Flat, roughly cut stone sized to fill wire gabion baskets, for walls and bank stabilization. The basket holds the shape; the stone fills it and faces it.
Hardscape
Ledge and stacked stone for the falls, stream walls and pond edge of a water feature. Chosen for how it stacks and how it greys down and mosses once water runs over it.
Aquascape
Smooth, rounded river rock in mixed grey, tan and pink, running from coarse stone down to fine pebble. Used for pond bottoms, planted edges and the soft joins between harder stone.
Aquascape
Single large granite boulders, for a focal point, a natural seat or an outcropping at the edge of a bed. Hard stone that keeps its face, so what you pick is what you get.
Landscape accents
Pink granite shot through with black and white speckle, cut from a big block. Set a piece as a seat, a marker or a focal point in a bed, and the face is the whole reason for it.
Landscape accents
A boulder with a pinkish-tan outside and a dark green-black face crossed by white and pale green veining. One piece does the work of a whole planting bed if it is set where it can be seen.
Landscape accents
Boulders in mixed color — dark green, grey and deep purple-pink — chosen one at a time for their face. Not a load of uniform rock; you pick the pieces you want to look at.
Landscape accents
Angular crushed granite and gravel for paths, driveways, bed cover and the joints between flagstone. Angular stone locks together underfoot and drains instead of holding water.
